We start off our ride from ‘Ban Chu’ an old unassuming wooden house in Pandanmaran. This quaint little village established in 1951 is now the second largest new village in Selangor. It is located in the South of Klang and is the one and only new village in Klang.
The British colonial government was aiming to destroy the communist influence and thus gathered all of the Chinese residents here, where many of them came from Kuala Langat and Kuala Selangor constituencies. Today, population is around 45,000 villagers.
Although the social demographic is changing rapidly, as more and more young people move to the city for greener pastures, those that choose to stay on fight on to keep the family trade and perhaps, legacy. Most of these traditional trade would be lost and swayed with the tides of urbanisation.
We will explore the morning wet market of Pandanmaran, where the hive of activity is. As we set off along Jalan Papan, your senses will be heightened. Tickle your taste bud with a cup of original Klang brewed coffee/tea we called Cham, as we have a local breakfast in the village.
We will learn about the historical river Aur as many produce were channeled to Kuala Lumpur back in the 1960s. Among the first settlers arrived and lived around edges of the forest close to Sungai Aur.
Here, you will get to see the Teochew people whom ancestors had migrated from Southern China; how they live and work. Cycle at a cruising speed back to ‘Ban Chu’ and end the ride with a refreshing drink made from ‘Ban Chu’s kitchen. Be prepared to cycle off the beaten path, mingle with the locals, be prepared for the unexpected, come hungry as we will feed you with local food and have an adventurous spirit.
