Cycled from Desa Pandan to Taman Shamelin Morning Market and back. Saw a big crowd congregating at a shop on the way back. We stopped and found many old bicycles parked outside the shop with people congregating outside shop. On closer inspection, the elderly people gathered there are waiting for rice distribution.
Every 10th lunar month, 200 packets of 5 kg rice will be given free to peopled aged 55 years old and above to residents living around Ampang area, ie with 68000 as postcode. This was part of the shop’s charity. Queue numbers will be given starting 8 am and rice distribution is 10.30am onwards.
What I was more intrigued and impressed was the amount of antique bicycles surrounding the area. You rarely get to see such antique bicycles coming out in throngs. Some with baskets and some with dynamo lights. One way or the other, elderly people above 55 years old still ride bicycles despite the lack of infrstructure in Kuala Lumpur. We have a ratio of 1:3 of pedestrian pathways versus vehicle lanes, which means for every passable pedestrian pathway, there are three good vehicular lanes¹. This shows an imbalance to provided space where priority is given to passive mobility, motorised vehicles. One passable pedestrian pathway is averaged at 1.2m wide, approximately for one wheelchair/ pram to maneuver, whereas one vehicular lane is at 3m wide. (Ref: Improvement Street Downtown)
Awesomeness to have a mini Copenhagen!
